Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka gave his side an honest assessment of his side following their woeful 0-2 loss to Newcastle United on Monday, May 16.
The Gunners fell to Eddie Howe’s side and finished second throughout the game, meaning their hopes of a top four are now at stake.
The loss means they are now two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur as they head into the final game of the season.
They need to win and let Spurs lose. Even a draw for Antonio Conte’s side means the Gunners will need to make up for 14 goals conceded.
Xhaka criticized his teammates for their chaotic performance in the defeat to Newcastle, saying (via Telegraph):
“We came here to show a different game but from the first minute to the 90th minute we didn’t deserve to be on the pitch today.”
“We didn’t follow the plan of the game, we didn’t listen to the coach. It was a disaster of the performance. It’s very difficult to execute it at the moment. I don’t know why we don’t. follow the will of the coach. is asking us.”
The Swiss midfielder then alluded to the ages of the players in the Arsenal squad. He insists it doesn’t matter how old they are, they have to prepare for such an important match:
“I don’t know. If someone isn’t ready for this game, then stay home. It doesn’t matter the age. You can be 30, 35, you can be 10, you can be 18. If not. ready, If you’re nervous, stay on the bench or stay at home. Don’t come here.
“We need people with the ball, sorry to say, people who can come here and play. Very sad. It is important not to accept that. Feeling very sorry for the Arsenal supporters. I said. sorry them. I don’t” without any other words. “
Granit Xhaka shows post-match fight but Arsenal lacks momentum in Newcastle loss
Granit Xhaka made an admirable statement about the Gunners’ lack of determination to get an important victory. But that doesn’t erase the capitulation his side have encountered at such a crucial stage of the season.
It was Arsenal’s biggest game since the FA Cup win over Chelsea in 2020 and they faltered. They have, in all likelihood, awarded their north London rivals a Champions League spot.
Mikel Arteta’s side will feel the wound in the Newcastle defeat and it will be interesting to see how they react.
