We pulled up old carpet and discovered an ‘amazing’ hidden find dating back to 1860 – we never expected it

A CLEVER TikToker has unveiled the unexpected find as he set to work on an 1860s rug.

During the home renovation project, she discovered a hidden surprise.

Kathryn Holloway (@totheshireborn) shared a clip of the original house in a Video posted on TikTok.

The room dates from the 1860s and had rich red carpets.

Kathryn went to work, first pulling up the carpet and finally the self-leveling compound.

To her surprise, beneath the self-leveling compound, she discovered ornate tiles covering the floor.

She gave the tiles a thorough wipe down and renewed them, revealing a revival of old-fashioned craftsmanship.

“We never expected to find this under the rug,” she said.

The video attracted many viewers who shared their thoughts on the relic under the carpet.

“How lucky you are,” wrote one.

“It was such an amazing thing to find her in the house,” Kathryn replied.

“Incredible find,” added another.

“They really were – it’s been a long road to recover them so far,” Kathryn wrote back.

“How the heck could anyone think covering up those beautiful tiles with a red carpet is a good idea?” a third commented.

Kathryn added more context to the historical find in the comments section.

“Facts about the floor – it dates from 1860. It was made by Maw & Co. It is made of encaustic tiles and contains no asbestos.

“The tiles are level, the rooms on either side were boarded and carpeted.

“The joint was used to match the level of the tiles to the boards,” she revealed.
