PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The video that Dr. Pennsylvania Senate candidate Mehmet Oz on social media is receiving viral attention.
But not in the way he wanted and not exactly for his intended message.
In the video posted to Twitter in April, the Republican nominee spoke about how grocery store inflation is affecting families.
“Inflation hurts American families. Under Joe Biden, gas prices are skyrocketing and food prices are rising. We must stop the reckless spending. That’s rude! Thank you Joe,” Oz tweeted.
The video shows Oz buying vegetables for raw food production at a supermarket in Pennsylvania.
The video recently resurfaced on social media and became fodder for Oz’s Democratic opponent, John Fetterman.
In one of his tweets on Wednesday, the current Pennsylvania lieutenant governor pointed out how Oz mentioned the grocery store’s name at the beginning of the video: “Wegners.”
“Wegners” appears to be a combination of two Pennsylvania grocery chains: Wegman’s and Redner’s.
Fetterman also used the video to maintain his criticism of Oz as an elite carpet-bearer who relocated from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to run for the Senate seat.
In a dedicated video, Fetterman counters Oz’s use of the word crudités. Fetterman holds a tray of vegetables and says, “In Pa. let’s call this a vegetable tray.
Fetterman also began selling stickers that read “Wegners: Let them eat crudités.”
A parody Twitter account when the Wegners supermarket chain (whose bio reads “The Crudité Capital of Central PA”) was launched days ago. It has over 16,000 followers.
Oz did not directly respond to the social media reaction, but tweeted on Tuesday afternoon: “Reminder: Inflation remains at a 40-year high.”
In terms of the economy, falling gas prices gave Americans a little respite from the pain of high inflation last month, although the rise in overall prices slowed only slightly from the four-decade high it hit in June.
CNN business reporter Nicole Goodkind writes: “You’re getting about 11 cents less in the grocery store than you were a year ago. That dollar covers 15 cents less on utility bills and is worth six cents less on rent and housing costs. That adds up to a pretty decent chunk of loose change.
“The inflation rate is almost as high as it was in the early 1980s. According to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report in July, it was 8.5% but would have been higher had gas prices not fallen.”
