West Ham United have rekindled their interest in Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard, whose contract with the Red Devils expires this summer, according to Sky Sports.
Lingard rose through the ranks at Manchester United’s academy before making his senior debut for them in 2014. The attacker made 232 first-team appearances for the Old Trafford side.
However, the England international’s time with the Red Devils appears to be coming to an end. He is expected to leave the club soon when his contract with them expires this summer.
Lingard, though, could move to a top Premier League club before the 2022-23 season. According to the aforementioned source, West Ham are interested in signing him on a free transfer.
Irons already have a base with Lingard’s agent despite the player having a month left on his Manchester United contract. According to reports, they have made ‘initial inquiries’ about the 29-year-old’s ability to buy back services.
Lingard has found playing time hard to pass at Old Trafford this season. He had just 548 minutes in the first team, scoring two goals and providing an assist in the process.
The attacker’s brother blew up the Reds after their final home game of the season against Brentford earlier this month. He was furious after Lingard remained an unused substitute in the match and was denied the opportunity to bid farewell to the home supporters.
Lingard followed it up with a cryptic social media post. He has published an image of himself from his time at the club’s academy on Twitter and Instagram without any accompanying captions.
Manchester United’s Lingard impressed on loan to West Ham
Lingard has spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan at West Ham. The England international has impressed during his time at London Stadium, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in 16 appearances.
David Moyes’ side are also interested in signing the 29-year-old this January. Newcastle United are also said to have been interested in him during the winter transfer window.
However, the Reds refused to sanction a move for him, according to the aforementioned source. According to Fabrizio Romano, it has worsened the relationship between the club and the player.
Now it remains to be seen where the future lies for him.
