It happened just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of 50th Street and Haverford Avenue in West Philadelphia.
According to police, two girls, aged 3 and 13, were traveling with their mother and 29-year-old friend when the accident happened.
The victims were standing on the corner of 50th Street when they were struck by the driver, who lost control of the vehicle and jumped the curb.
“These three victims were hit with such force that they were all thrown out of their shoes because we found their shoes and sneakers and slides all on the sidewalk,” said Scott Small, Philadelphia chief inspector.
The 29-year-old woman suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
The young girls suffered minor injuries, according to police.
The girls’ mother was not injured.
Investigators said the vehicle was going so fast that it knocked a fire hydrant off its base when it struck the girls and their mother’s friend.
John Smith, a Good Samaritan who walked by, said he tried to help the 29-year-old victim.
“She literally screamed, ‘Why is this happening to me?'” Smith said. “There is no excuse.”
He said the injury was gruesome and witnesses did everything they could until help arrived.
“We did everything we could to keep her calm and let her know she’s going to be okay,” Smith said. “The police came and tied a tourniquet and tried to stop the bleeding and that probably saved her life.”
Smith said the five-point junction is busy and that several accidents have happened there this summer.
Officials review video of the crash and say they believe speed played a role.
No arrests were made at this time.
Police said they were looking for a dark-colored car, possibly a Nissan, last seen on Haverford Avenue.
No further details about the vehicle being searched for were released.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 215-686-TIPS.
