West Philadelphia shooting leaves family injured including 2-year-old boy

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A young family is one of the latest victims of the gun violence epidemic in Philadelphia.

Police say the SUV the family was driving in came under fire late Wednesday night, injuring four people, including an infant.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. in the Creighton Street and Wyalusing Avenue area of West Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said officers found a 26-year-old man lying on the sidewalk on Creighton Street suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

He was taken to a local hospital and placed in critical condition.

A short way up the block near 51st Street and Wyalusing Avenue, police found three other victims in the bullet-riddled Kia SUV.

“We don’t know if anyone shot this vehicle intentionally or if it was hit by scattered shots, but the vehicle clearly has 10 bullet holes,” Small said.

It’s unclear what triggered the shooting, but police said the shooting likely took place near Creighton Street.

Investigators said the injured man stood in front of the family’s SUV and spoke to two women who were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

The driver of the SUV then drove another block before stopping.

According to police, the two women in the SUV, a 26-year-old passenger and a 37-year-old driver, are both in critical condition after being hit. One was shot in the head, another in the back.

A 2-year-old boy and a 6-year-old boy were in the back seat of the SUV at the time of the shooting, but police said only the 2-year-old was shot.

He was rushed to Philadelphia Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg, where he was placed in stable condition.

Police say the woman who was shot in the head may be the boys’ mother.

Police believe all of the shooting victims could be related.

No arrests were made.

According to Action News’ Data Journalism Team, 114 children under the age of 18 were shot dead in Philadelphia this year (as of July 12).

This was one of two quadruple shootings in one night on the town. The other, which occurred in North Philadelphia, left four teenagers in critical condition.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 215-686-TIPS.
