What happens to Overwatch loot boxes and credits when Overwatch 2 launches?

The Overwatch 2 The Blizzard team answered some fan questions about the upcoming title in a Reddit AMA. A big takeaway from this update of the game is how the sequel will handle loot boxes and currency from the original Overwatch.

Overwatch fans have been patiently awaiting the release of Overwatch 2. While the game itself has been in the works for quite some time, it’s finally set to release for early access in October 2022.

Details of the game’s launch, content and structure have been revealed and discussed by the developers. In particular, Blizzard’s reveal event last month gave fans their best look at the game yet.

Overwatch 2 will be a free-to-play live service game, with Blizzard aiming to release seasonal updates for the game every 9 weeks. A Battle Pass will be available for each season, and constant updates will add additional heroes and maps for players.

Blizzard has outlined the plan for the release of Overwatch 2.

At launch the game will feature 6 maps, a brand new game mode, 3 new heroes and of course new skins and cosmetics for players.

In the last AMA, a lot of questions revolved around loot boxes and in-game currency. In particular, what would happen to any content already in place when OW1 is switched to OW2.

Here’s everything you need to know about pre-existing loot boxes and in-game currency ahead of OW2’s release.

What will happen to my Overwatch loot boxes when OW2 launches?

For players who currently have quite a few unopened loot boxes, don’t worry: Overwatch 2 developers have confirmed that all content will be automatically opened and transferred from them.

Junker Queen drew a lot of attention ahead of Overwatch 2’s release.

While loot boxes themselves will not be included in Overwatch 2, fans have been assured that leaving pre-existing loot boxes unopened will not result in all of that content being lost.

“We don’t transfer loot crates into Overwatch 2, and prior to launch, any unopened loot crates will be automatically opened and your account will receive all content directly,” Overwatch’s commercial director said.

What about seasonal event loot boxes?

Seasonal Event Loot Boxes in Overwatch 1 are themed loot boxes that always contain at least one event-exclusive cosmetic item.

Regardless of when the box is opened, the items inside will always remain seasonally themed loot box, even if the event ended months ago.

These will also be broadcast when Overwatch 2 goes live. Similar to normal loot boxes, any seasonal event boxes that players have kept nearby will also automatically open when Overwatch 2 is first launched.

And other types of credit and currency?

It’s not just loot boxes that will be transferrable in Overwatch 2. Developers have also said that any unspent credits, comp points, and tokens will carry over to the sequel in some way.

“Existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and contest points) will come with you in Overwatch 2.”

They went on to clarify that what these pre-existing credits can be used for in the sequel will be very specific and will not necessarily have the same value as the brand new in-game currency introduced with Overwatch 2.

“OW1 Credits come with you to OW2, but our new virtual currency will be the primary currency and there will be things in OW2 that cannot be purchased with these OW1 Credits.”

What do the fans think of this?

The fans’ immediate reaction to this news is a joy, but also a surprise.

A lot of the comments in the Reddit thread suggest that players expected all the loot box cosmetics and collectibles to just disappear after Overwatch 2 launched.

“I’m really shocked by this response,” one Reddit user revealed after hearing the news that loot box contents will be transferrable.

We hope that nothing changes in the coming months and that Blizzard will keep their word and allow the transfer of already existing content. If not, players will most likely spend hours opening loot boxes before Overwatch 2 launches.

For all of the details revealed in the AMA, here is an extensive list of questions and answers.
