When you search for something using Windows Search, you may notice that it already includes results from OneDrive, Outlook, Bing, SharePoint, or other Microsoft Cloud services. This is an active Cloud content search feature, and Windows has it enabled by default.

However, there are cases where you may not want these results to be mixed with others. For example, if you have sensitive files and documents on OneDrive, you won’t want others to find them while they’re using Windows Search on your computer.

So, here’s how to disable Cloud Search in Windows.

How to disable Cloud Content Search through settings

The easiest way to turn off Cloud content search is to use the Settings app. Let’s start by seeing how to do that in Windows 10.

Right click Start above Task bar and choose Setting. In the window that opens, scroll down and click Search.

Under Cloud content searchset both conversions for Microsoft account and Work or school account arrive Turn off.

To disable Cloud Content Search in Windows 11, right-click Start above Task bar and go to Settings>Privacy & Security>Search Permissions.

How to disable Cloud Content Search with the Local Group Policy Editor

Another way to disable Cloud content search in Windows 10 and 11 is to use the Local Group Policy Editor. Press Win + CHEAP to open Windows Run. Type gpedit.msc in the text box and press enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.

Local Group Policy Editor is not pre-installed in Windows Home editions, which means you will have to add gpedit.msc manually if you want to use it.

Now, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search. Then double click Enable Cloud Search.

Click Allow radial button. Then under Optionextend Cloud search settings drop down and select Turn off Cloud Search.

Click ALRIGHT to apply the settings.

Controlling Cloud Content Search on Windows

You don’t have to see results from Microsoft Cloud services every time you search for something using Windows Search. And you certainly don’t have to worry about others accidentally finding your sensitive information stored in the Cloud when they borrow your computer and use the search feature.
