The strays is a British Netflix Original film written by actor/writer/director Nat Martello-White. With this film he made his feature film debut and wrote the screenplay.

It tells the story of a privileged black woman whose seemingly perfect life begins to fall apart when two strangers show up in her quiet, prosperous town.

Besides Madekwe, the cast consists of more talented actors like Bukky Bakray, Jorden Myrie, Justin Salinger, Samuel Small, Maria Almeida, Tom Andrews and Lucy Liemann.

What is The Strays on Netflix about?

We shared the thriller’s plot above, but we also wanted to provide a more detailed synopsis.

The story is initially set in 2003. The protagonist is a light-skinned black woman named Cheryl who faces constant adversity and is fed up with leading a miserable life due to institutionalized racism and exclusion. So she decides to run away from her problems to seek a better life. Then we cut it down to 18 years later and Cheryl is now called Neve and lives in a mostly white neighborhood called Castle Combe with a husband and two children.

Cheryl/Neve has worked hard to hide her origins and strives to live the perfect life. Today she works as the assistant principal of her children’s private school and is well respected in the community. But all her hard work to live as prosperously as possible is undone by the arrival of a black man and woman she feels doesn’t belong. As Cheryl/Neve grapples with the two strangers, her carefully curated upper-middle-class life begins to unravel and her past haunts her.

The Stray Parents and Age Ratings Guide

The thriller is rated TV-MA, meaning it is intended for mature, adult viewers only. This maturity rating was given for strong language, smoking and violence. Given what the film is about, this rating seems reasonable. Overall, we wouldn’t recommend watching this film with young children around. It may not be suitable for children under the age of 17.
