What are the laws in the UK regarding nudity?

Under UK law, being naked in public is not a criminal offense – but becomes a criminal offense if the person undresses with the intention of “exciting or shocking”.

This is the case for England and Wales – Scottish law only has the common law offense of “insulting the public decency”.

The Crown Prosecution Service states: “In the absence of a sexual context and in relation to nudity, when the individual has no intention of causing alarm or distress, it is usually appropriate not to take action unless members of the public have become actually harassed, alarmed or distressed.

“In that case such conduct should at most be regarded as a criminal offense under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 and consideration must be given to whether it is in the public interest to prosecute.”

Still, it’s best to stick to designated naturist beaches so as not to offend beachgoers, as many might feel uncomfortable with young children.

When you find yourself on a nudist beach, there is also social etiquette you must adhere to, including not staring at or taking pictures of others.

However, it’s worth noting that the entire beach may not be nudist and may have designated zones, so it’s worth checking before you strip down.
