A TRAVEL to Lapland is on every child’s wish list, especially at Christmas time.
Here’s everything you need to know about the destination, including what to see and how much it costs to take a vacation.
Where is Lapland and how cold does it get?
Although Santa Claus is said to live at the North Pole, it’s not the easiest place to get to – Lapland is a much better option.
Located in northern Finland in the Arctic Circle, Lapland is the perfect place for a winter family adventure in the snow – and maybe even see the Northern Lights.
It gets very, very cold in Lapland, usually ranging from 0°C to -20°C but can get cold as low as -40°C.
Pack the warmest clothing possible, including snow boots, snow pants and coats, thermals, wool socks, and sweaters.
Is Lapland a country?
No, Lapland is a region of northern Europe that lies mostly on the Arctic Circle and transitions into Finland, Sweden and the Kola Peninsula of Russia.
The area people visit to see Santa Claus is usually in Finland.
When is the best time to visit Lapland?
Perhaps not surprisingly, the best time to visit Lapland is during the winter season.
That means holidays between November and March, when the snow is thickest.
Of course, if you want a festive break, your best bet is to book a holiday in November or December.
How much does it cost to travel to Lapland?
Holidays in Lapland are not cheap, but there are ways to make the breaks more budget-friendly.
Families can book a stay at Santa Claus Holiday Village – his ‘official home’ – in Rovaniemi, Finland, which includes a cottage stay from around £300 a night.
Children can meet Santa Claus every day in the holiday village and have their picture taken with him and the elves.
The holiday village also has restaurants and cafes and is only a few kilometers from Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, with direct flights from the UK from £118.
Or if you fancy a ski holiday, you can head to Levi in Kittilä – Finland’s largest ski resort – which has its very own Santa Claus experience called Santa Claus Levi.
Families can book an hour at Santa Claus Levi, where they visit Santa’s house, which includes an elf school and workshops, as well as Christmas drinks and cookies – and tickets start at £65.
We’ve found other great deals from £599 a night at MagicBreaks, despite most 2022 Lapland trips being sold out.
For 2023, TUI has some great deals with three nights from £767pp, while Inghams offers breaks from £869pp.
Where is Lapland UK and how much is it
If you don’t want to leave the country, you can also visit Lapland UK in Ascot, Berkshire.
The Christmas Experience tells the story of Santa Claus for children and adults during a 90-minute show of immersive theater where the performers interact with the audience.
Along the way, you’ll also visit the toy factory, where children can help build the toys, and the “Mother Christmas” kitchen with gingerbread decorating classes.
Children can meet huskies, reindeer and Santa Claus at the end, as well as visit the ice rink and candy store.
Tickets for 2022 are sold out, but families can sign up to receive cancellations or get tickets for 2023 here.
