What did people say Babylon?
Some critics have called Babylon an ingenious fever dream; others describe it as an agonizing three hours with nothing to say. Mashable Film editor Kristy Puchko wrote: “Babylon assaults audiences with sickening gags and tiresome debauchery, and paints the film industry as a hedonistic hellscape of failed egos, forgotten tragedies and devious star power.”
“While this easy-going attitude may sound exciting, it’s all done with a smug attitude that’s exhausting at first and only grows more as the film sits through an excruciating three hour and eight minute runtime. Even in a comedy packed with scat humor, Chazelle takes himself painfully seriously.”
Puchko continues: “Amidst all this chaos and charisma, Babylon is ultimately superficial. His condemnation of Hollywood feels angry but lacks depth. Their criticism is full of outrage but little argument… So, as wild as it sounds, Babylon is not crazy fun or sneaky campy. It’s just boring.”
