Who Lost Alaska, Palin or Ranked Choice?

Alaska’s next congressman will be a Democrat Maria Peltola. She beat two Republicans in a special election held Aug. 16 under the state’s new ranked voting system. Congratulations to Mrs Peltola and no disrespect intended. . . but what the hell? Alaska voted 10 points for President Trump in 2020. Is that the true will of the voters now?

The runner-up was Sarah Palin, and part of the story seems to be that Republicans were polarized by their history. However, analyzing the results is difficult given how these ranked choices work. The ballot lets voters choose multiple names in order of preference. If no candidate wins a majority, the bottom contender is eliminated and that person’s voters are reassigned to their second choice (or third or fourth, if the process continues).
