After No. 4 USC was beaten by Utah in the second half of Friday night’s Pac-12 championship game, it was immediately clear which four teams would make the college football playoffs and compete for a spot in the national title game at SoFi Stadium.
No matter what happened on Saturday, No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Texas Christian and No. 5 Ohio State would be the only teams nationally to end the regular season undefeated or lost. A team with two losses has never made it into the CFP field.
The only thing that remains to be determined is the sowing. After TCU’s 31-28 loss in overtime in the Big 12 championship game to Kansas State, the Horned Frogs have opened up to a debate about whether to stay ahead of Ohio State, which went on Saturday after losing 45-23 to Kansas State didn’t play the Wolverines last weekend in Columbus. It is likely that the CFP selection committee will avoid a semifinal rematch between Michigan and Ohio State and keep TCU in 3rd place. But at least it’s a question now.
Here are answers to other important college football questions:
When will we know who made it to the CFP semifinals?
The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will announce the top of the bracket Sunday at 9 a.m. PST on ESPN.
What about the remaining six bowls of the New Year?
ESPN will announce the final CFP Top 25 rankings and pairings for all of the New Year’s Six Bowls at 11:30 am PST. Announcements for the non-playoff bowls are typically made during the broadcast, with the final lineup being finalized by early afternoon.
What bowls do USC and UCLA play in?
USC will likely end up in the Cotton Bowl and face Tulane. UCLA’s prospects are a little bleaker, but the Sun Bowl remains a potential target.
Will Caleb Williams still win the Heisman Trophy?
On Friday night, it felt like Caleb Williams locked in the Heisman Trophy. After passing 363 yards and three touchdowns and playing the entire second half with a sore hamstring, the one thing Williams didn’t do was lead the Trojans to a heroic victory. He proved once again that he would be a worthy Heisman winner.
On Saturday morning, TCU quarterback Max Duggan made his move and, after another deficit in the second half, forced the Horned Frogs to send the game into overtime. But the fact Duggan couldn’t finish it in overtime makes it unlikely he can garner the late votes to pass Williams.
How do I get tickets to watch the CFP title game at SoFi Stadium?
The majority of the game tickets are allocated to the two participating institutions and sold directly through the respective school. Many others will be available on the secondary market.
The College Football Playoff lists official ticket options on its website.
