Who’s on the new Netflix show?
Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most anticipated Netflix original series coming to the streamer in 2024. The popular Nickelodeon series won hearts in the late 1980s when it was a must-watch fantasy drama on children’s channels.
The Netflix adaptation of the series will be a live-action version, bringing the animated film to life and trying to succeed with Aang’s story outside of animation. Directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan, the 2010 live-action film was panned and faced controversy for poor storytelling and a cast that did not adequately reflect the diversity of its source material.
While co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have pulled out of the Netflix adaptation — on the grounds that the work environment wasn’t as collaborative as hoped — it appears Netflix is working to avoid the mistakes that Shyamalan at least in terms of quality has made the cast.
Luckily the casting is for Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender has been more accurate so far, as both Asian and Indigenous actors have been cast in the lead roles of the series. This has stayed the same for the rest of the cast.
