It’s no secret that space has a profound impact on productivity and many other aspects of our lives. Research shows that people who have control over the layout of their workspace are not only happier and healthier, but also up to 32% more productive.

Now, remote workspaces have become part of the new normal for many of us. So it’s more important than ever to pay attention and organize it according to each person’s individual needs.

In my practice as a productivity professional, I like to recommend to my clients a “do not do” checklist. And one of the first points that I follow is related to the environment in which we work because it is one of the key productivity fundamentals.

But with this freedom of choice for remote office space comes great responsibility. Following our own unique ideas, needs and desires in a remote work setting gives us the joy of getting into “work mode” much more easily, opportunities to become much more productive and successful.

While in charge, we must understand what serves us best and what should be eliminated. Without further ado, here are some important aspects of why an inspiring remote workspace will help you achieve career success and how to make it happen.

1. It creates action focus

While we can understand that productivity is determined not by how well we do it but by the quality of the actions we take, in an office environment distractions can cost us a lot. efficiency priority.

With the work-from-home setup, however, we can already anticipate our distractions, so let’s get rid of them before they happen.


Let’s step back and analyze a bit. What drew your attention to wandering off quest? What do you think distracts you?

Although there are many things that distract us every day, we are not without fault here. We are the ones who allow our distracted thinking, “it will only take a minute,” to turn into another hour of misplaced focus.

To tackle our distractions with focused action, here’s your 3-step system:

Step 1: Identify the 5 senses

  • Audio – chit chat, pets, white noise, music
  • Induction – chair, clothes, table
  • Sight – screen, wallpaper, environment, view
  • Smell – coffee, nature, scent
  • Taste – aftertaste, what you are eating/chewing

Your work environment should be triggered by as few triggers as possible, so choose wisely. To do that, you must identify what distracts you most about the five senses.

Step 2: Remove your preferences

If you have your phone or bag of peanuts on your desk, you might be distracted by one of them. To avoid that, put your phone somewhere else and hide the peanuts so they are out of reach.

It’s very easy to pick up your phone when you hear that “bing” sound whenever a new message arrives or when you see a notification on the screen pop up. You know your triggers best, so use that knowledge to your advantage.

Outside distractions greatly affect our work, but we tend to be more distracted than we should be. So stay focused on your tasks and eliminate your choices — it’s all in your hands.

Step 3: Set boundaries

If your laptop is your primary work device, you obviously can’t get it off your list of distractions. However, to keep yourself focused, set boundaries to spend a certain amount of time in the places where you shouldn’t be spending time.

If you pause your work for ten minutes and start watching YouTube videos of funny cats, that can last much longer than just ten minutes (trust me, I know!) . So instead of constantly procrastinating, set boundaries.

For example, watch only two videos, or if you allow yourself to do it for five minutes, be sure to set a timer on it to keep yourself accountable and productive.

2. It unleashes creativity

Your remote workspace should be the most engaging, motivating and inspiring place you are in the area to create.

You are establishing work from home as a safe space for ideas to flow because you created it to serve you. If the space makes you feel comfortable, it allows you to be as productive as possible.


The performance of your work depends on your productivity flow. So knowing your process is crucial if you want to improve your performance, level up and work less without ruining your success.

We’ve all seen people level up in their businesses by getting busier as a normal progression, but what if leveling up and actually working less? That can be achieved by using your productivity stream wisely.

Understanding your productivity process starts with figuring out your peak duration. It’s the time when you’re most productive, focused, energetic, and accomplished.

So look back on your days and ask:

  • What is the best time for me to have team meetings?
  • What is the best time for me to work in my genius field?
  • What is the best time for me to receive calls?
  • What is the best time for me to interview?

By knowing these answers to your important questions, you’ll get the most out of the action you’re taking. Plus, you’ll make a bigger impact and feel more fit for your purpose.

But you have to work because I can’t answer those questions for you. To help you out a bit, I can tell you from experience, that’s usually two to four hours a day.

With this in mind, look at your schedule and notice the shift in your energy levels from task to task. After understanding your process, all you have to do is fill that window with the appropriate actions.

3. It has the order of things

Ordering is an extremely important aspect of being productive. Without order, we will be lost and have difficulty concentrating, not to mention prioritizing and managing everything related to work.

By taking the time to declarative and simplify your environment, you’ll be more productive step by step. Your concentration will increase and your mind will be clearer because there simply won’t be much to distract you.

A cluttered desk is a reflection of a chaotic approach to work. That can affect your clarity, decision-making, and most of all, focus.

Where to Start and How Much to Declare?

Your desk and laptop should be on this list first. After all, this is where you spent most of your working time. The next step is to maintain those areas consistently with no clutter and make sure you have a spot for everything and everything in its rightful place.

Everything that gets you stuck is a mess that you don’t need anymore because it’s not serving you. Things you are not sure about are often unnecessary. And remember that clutter stored in a box somewhere deep in the closet is still cluttered and taking up your precious space.

Simplification always works in your favor

Simplification is in your favor because it saves you a lot of valuable time.

So instead of putting folders in folders in folders, reevaluate your system (be it electronic or physical). Is it simple enough for you to find things when you need them? Does your order serve you or make you work harder?

While there may be more to your office space than just work, that doesn’t mean you need to get rid of everything that leaves you with blank walls. It may not be easy to understand at first what you should get rid of.
