That ’90s show has found success on Netflix as fans around the world reunite with the old That 70’s show Gang, as well as a new generation of Point Place teenagers. But superfans of the original sitcom were certainly delighted to reunite with Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp as Red and Kitty Forman.

In the summer of 1995, Red and Kitty take their 15-year-old granddaughter, Leia (Callie Haverda), to the basement where their parents, Eric and Donna, grew up.

While the original cast don’t make frequent appearances during the 10-episode first season, their cameos here and there are bright spots in an otherwise exciting new chapter of a popular TV staple. However, fans are spoiled in every single episode of Red and Kitty.

Towards the end of the season, viewers may have noticed that Red began using a cane as he walked around the Forman house. Why does Kurtwood Smith use a cane in That ’90s show? Here’s the explanation the series provides for the character.

Why does Kurtwood Smith use a cane on That ’90s Show?

In the back half of the season, Red uses a cane to get around the house and it seems like Kurtwood Smith had to use it himself. The series explains Red’s sudden use of the cane as an accident involving neighbor Sherri (Andrea Anders), who ran her bike over him.

The encounter takes place off-screen, meaning we can’t see the accident. TV shows usually use this type of presentation to explain something that isn’t part of the story. That said, Kurtwood Smith needing a stick had to be explained, but it didn’t have to be a big deal for Red in the story.

It’s currently unconfirmed why Smith is requiring the use of a cane. The actor doesn’t appear to have spoken out about it publicly, and fans should respect his privacy. At the end of the day, we know the hilarious coincidence that led to Red needing a stick. Just add Sherri and her messy ways to the long list of people and things Red understandably hates.
