Devastating and shocking. Ever since he announced he was leaving The Witcher After three seasons in October 2022 and replacing Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, viewers are left with one question: why did Henry Cavill leave? The Witcher and what was the real reason for his exit?

In a statement on his Instagram account at the time, Cavill announced that his stint as Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix fantasy series was coming to an end. “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with monsters and adventures and sadly I will be laying down my medallion and swords for Season 4,” he wrote. “In my place, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will assume the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest characters in literature, I pass the torch with reverence for the time I’ve spent impersonating Geralt and with enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most intriguing and nuanced man. Liam good sir there is such wonderful depth to this character, have fun diving in and see what you can find.”

As someone who had fought hard not only to make the series, but also to appear as a raspy-voiced monster hunter, this news was completely unexpected and led fans to theories as to why Henry Cavill had left The Witcher and the reason we should have seen it coming.

Why did Henry Cavill leave? The Witcher? No official explanation was given as to why Cavill dropped out The Witcher, but as one would expect from the passionate nerd community (to which this author belongs), compelling theories exist. A true fan of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s original books and the video games developed by CD Projekt Red, Cavill fought hard to cast the show, taking the lead role as Geralt while the writers stayed true to the source material. He debuted as White Wolf in 2019 with a salary that would eventually reach $1 million per episode.

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter In November 2021, Cavill said he was “absolutely” committed to telling Geralt’s story for seven seasons “as long as we can keep telling great stories that honor Sapkowski’s work.” It’s possible that the show deviated too much from the source material, and that’s one reason Cavill left. Interestingly, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich hinted that she and Cavill had a falling out over the show’s portrayal of Geralt in the same room THR Interview. “A lot of the notes he sent me were about Geralt’s dialogues – could he say more first of all,” Hissrich said. “Everyone came out of season one laughing and loving Geralt’s outbursts. But Henry said that when you read the books you spend a lot of time in Geralt’s head. So how do we get that on the page?”

Cavill again alluded to the issue that he and the writers disagreed in a December 2021 interview with THE STAR trying to get this Geralt into the showrunners’ vision. It’s about walking a fine line. It’s the story of the showrunners, so it’s an adaptation. The difficult thing for me was to find Geralt from the place of books in it and to be able to serve both as best as possible,” he said. “The things I’ve been pushing for; it wasn’t necessarily just more dialogue. It brought a more book-perfect Geralt to the big screen. Because, as I’m sure you know from the books, Geralt is an amateur philosopher. He’s an intellectual. He is wise and thoughtful. Yes, he is grumpy, morbid and snappy at times. But it’s important to me that the character is three-dimensional.” He continued, “And it’s difficult, like I said, because there’s a certain vision and set, story and plot. And so it was about me trying to find Geralt’s place in it. All of my questions and requests came down to staying true to the source material.” In a rare behind-the-scenes look, former writer Beau DeMayo revealed he had left The Witcher partly because of other authors’ attitudes toward the novels and games. In a now-defunct Instagram story, DeMayo claimed, “Some of [the writers] were not [fans] or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material)” per screenrant.

One user tweeted a screenshot of the many times Cavill had expressed displeasure with the show’s direction, and it sounds like Cavill lost his battle for good. However, a more cynical take on his exit is that he’s leaving to reprise his role as the Man of Steel in the next chapter of Superman, either for more money or because his schedule won’t allow it. “The character means so much to me. It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope,” Cavill told the audience during a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast at 92NY in New York City. “It’s amazing to be here now and talking about this again. The character has a bright future ahead of him. I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously happy Superman.”
