Why is the penis mushroom-shaped? – The US Sun

MEN may spend a lot of time thinking about their penis size.
It may not have occurred to them to consider why it is shaped the way it is.

It turns out there’s a reason penises have a mushroom-like crest.
Professor Gordon Gallup of the State University of New York led a team of scientists in 2003 to study the anatomy of the human penis and its uses. They found some pretty interesting ways to test why penises are mushroom shaped.
Why is the penis mushroom shaped?
Long ago, experts believed the penis evolved into a “tool,” with an edge, for removing the semen of love rivals.
The theory behind this is quite simple – basically, men want to make sure they’re the one who continues their lineage and wins in pregnancy.
Professor Gallup’s team wanted to get to the bottom of this theory. They found that the protrusion of the penis — and the ridge that separates the head from the shaft — could actually help rid a woman’s vagina and reproductive system of a previous lover’s sperm.
This meant that a new mate could eliminate any competition and replace it with their own sperm.
They tested their theory in the lab using latex penises and model vaginas.
Mixing starch and water together, they found that the ridge around the tip of a man’s penis could scoop out more than 90 percent of the “seed” replacement in just one thrust.
Professor Gallup explained: “We hypothesize that as a result of competition for fatherhood, male humans evolved uniquely configured penises that serve to force other men’s semen out of the vagina.
“So the human penis can allow men to replace their semen with the semen of their competitors.”
He said they found evidence that couples tend to have more energetic sex when the woman is suspected of cheating or when a couple has been separated.
It could, he said, be due to an unconscious desire to rid his partner of any trace of another man’s semen.
Professor Gallup’s colleague, Rebecca Burch, added: “Not only would a longer penis have been an advantage in keeping the semen in a less accessible part of the vagina, but by filling and expanding the vagina it would also reduce displacement of the semen left behind support and support other males as a means of maximizing the likelihood of fatherhood,” in the study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology.

The theory dates back centuries ago when women had sex with a range of partners to increase their chances of conceiving.
Although that’s why the human penis evolved the way it did, it’s likely that it’s less important to men today.

What other penis shapes are there?
There are many different types of penis shapes.
There is no standard shape and no penis should be considered normal or abnormal.
While most will be variations on the mushroom shape, they can have a variety of differences.
Size, girth, angle or circumcision are among the factors that can cause men to have different looking penises.
