Why Sony Still Can’t Produce Enough PS5 Consoles

Sony aims to produce 18 million PS5 consoles this year, but that’s still not enough for the expected demand. Why can’t they make more dashboards?

If you’re one of the many gamers hoping to get a brand new PS5, it’s still unlikely you’ll be able to get one this year.

That’s because while Sony has announced it will produce more units than last year, the basics of the supply chain have remained unchanged.

Sony continues to lack production targets for the PS5 . console

Sony had some bittersweet news to share with PS5 lovers during its 2021 earnings report, published on May 10, 2022.

The company says it sold just 11.5 million PS5 consoles that fiscal year, short of the 14.8 million it targeted.

However, they aim to produce 18 million PS5 consoles for this financial year through March 2023. However, the company still thinks that it will not be enough to meet the huge demand for this console.

And that makes sense, as many gamers haven’t been able to buy it since it launched two years ago.

Why is Sony falling behind in PS5 production?

Remember that chip shortage problem affecting industries across the globe? It’s still going on and it’s continuing to affect the gaming industry, including Sony. That’s because the chip is one of the key components used to make the PS5 console.

Another reason is that shipping delays affect the supply chain. This means that some of the critical components needed to make the PS5 get stuck in transit for long periods of time.

All of this is caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected businesses and industries around the world. While most of the world is now open, the BBC reports that some cities are still under lockdown, like Shanghai. This affects companies in the region that manufacture parts for control panels.

In essence, the PlayStation 5 is one of the many casualties of the pandemic. And that is probably why the company has planned to produce the PS4 console in 2022.

Will you be able to buy a PS5 console soon?

Due to Sony’s manufacturing issues, we won’t be pinning our hopes on finding a PS5 console anytime soon. The fact that the stores were running out of stock didn’t help either.

Unless you’re willing to buy from a reseller, of course, that means spending a ridiculous amount of cash. Otherwise, you will have to stay put until something changes.
