bolt: With apologies to Lee Corso, slow down my friends. If everyone agrees that Michigan clinched the best win of the college football season with that overwhelming triumph over Ohio State, then let’s give the Buckeyes credit for their ability to elevate the Wolverines’ prestige . If the Trojans stumble on Friday, I think Ohio State with a loss in the CFP should be above a team that would have lost twice to Utah.

McCollough: I’ll thank the great Dan Wetzel from Yahoo! Sport with that thought he presented in a column this week: Georgia, Michigan, TCU and USC should be locked in the playoffs and this championship weekend counts only for seeding. His reasoning, with which I agree, is that if this is the top 4 at 13 weeks and the two teams behind it in the rankings (presumably Ohio State and Alabama) aren’t playing that weekend and therefore can’t prevail, the field should be set. Do I think the selection committee would pick 11-2 USC, which isn’t the Pac-12 champion, over 11-1 Ohio State? It’s doubtful, but it may depend on how USC loses in this scenario. If it’s another heartbreaking loss to the Utes in the closing minutes, there’s definitely an argument that the Trojans did better than Ohio State in the biggest game of their season when they were throttled 45-23 at home by Michigan . However, my gut feeling is that if USC lost on Friday, they would be out of the playoffs.

card: With all due respect to that mindset, I firmly believe that a second loss to Utah should keep USC out of playoff talk. I would be absolutely stunned if it went any other way. Why do we have the conference title games if we admit they’re just for CFP seeding? Ohio State reached the final game of its regular season without losing a single game and then lost to a much better team than Utah. Both teams beat Notre Dame. Is a win over UCLA better than a win over Penn State? I certainly don’t think so.

All those hypotheses aside, none of it matters if USC beats Utah and wins the Pac-12 title. what it will be

Nguyen: Win and you’re in for USC. But a loss should see the Trojans eliminated and continue the Pac-12’s playoff drought. A non-Pac 12 champion with two losses, USC shouldn’t get a spot above Ohio State just because the Big Ten is still using their divisions to decide the championship matchup, eliminating Ohio State’s chance of a rematch against Michigan in the conference is eliminated title game.
