Windward hires DJ Gay as its boys’ basketball coach

DJ Gay, who was a 2007 All-City Guard at Sun Valley Poly and became a standout at San Diego State, has been hired as Windward’s new boys’ basketball coach.

He was the head coach at La Jolla Country Day, which reached the San Diego Section Division 1 championship game last season.

“We’re really hooked,” said Windward athletic director Tyrone Powell. “From the first conference I thought this guy fitted in with our school’s values.”

Gay’s coach at Poly, Brad Katz, now an assistant director at Westlake, said, “I went to San Diego and saw him coach both the travel ball and country day,” Katz said. “He’s doing a really good job. He is calm and the kids respond well.”

The 33-year-old gay takes over from Colin Pfaff, who resigned to move to Northern California with his family. Gay’s first task will be to ensure that Windward’s talented group of young players stays with Windward.

It’s going to be an interesting 2022-23 in basketball for Windward, who also had to find a new girls’ basketball coach after Vanessa Nygaard resigned to join the WNBA. She was replaced by Jerica Williams. Both played basketball in the state of San Diego. Windward hires DJ Gay as its boys’ basketball coach
