World’s coolest McDonald’s sees diners eat onboard an abandoned PLANE – still kitted out with cockpit & propellors

CUSTOMERS can enjoy their meal on an abandoned plane at what could be the coolest McDonald’s in the world.
Tucked away in a small town in New Zealand, you’ll find one of their restaurants attached to a decommissioned airplane.
Guests can enjoy their meals in the cabin of the vintage Douglas DC-3, which can accommodate 20 people each.
You can even see the original cockpit, preserved behind a glass door.
Food must be ordered from the main restaurant next door, but with ten tables on the plane there is enough space.
The aircraft, which has been given a brand new coat of paint and branded with the McDonald’s logo, has been in its current location for over 30 years.
It stood next to the existing Maccies branch in Taupo for 24 years before the owners decided to expand their seating and convert the aircraft.
Accordingly insiderIt formerly advertised a car dealership, the Airplane Car Company, but was purchased by McDonald’s in 1990.
Franchise owners Eileen Byrne and her husband Des have owned the unique outlet since 2000 and told Insider it has become a hugely popular hotspot for tourists.
“We have received a lot of publicity from all over the world and our locals are very proud of it. It has become a landmark here in New Zealand.”
The quirky McDonald’s owners even added an Instagram-worthy area under the plane’s nose for visitors to take photos.
Eileen said the line of tourists lining up for snaps was “constant” and the plane had been featured in travel brochures, a Japanese tourism video and on Chinese television.
The aircraft is well preserved for visitors, although its engines have been removed.
Next to the cockpit, preserved and separated from the dining room, customers will find a storyboard telling the story of the aircraft.
For children, there is even a nearby playground with stairs leading to the tail of the plane.
