The sim world is about to expand a bit, when Laminar Research’s X-Plane 12 continue to deploy its development. The team behind the new flight sim has provided an extensive development update that includes confirmation of the matured systems and features, as well as other interesting tidbits. Laminar also confirmed that the next major milestone for X-Plane 12 is actually getting ready for public release as an Early Access title.

During this period, it will be available to everyone, which means it will not function as a closed beta release. This will release digitally on Steam first, and “later” will be a DVD release for those who prefer a physical release. Whichever edition you get, they’ll cost the series’ standard price of $59.99 USD. Interestingly, these Early Access courses are for X-Plane 12 will also grant customers access to its predecessor.

A lot in the lineup

As far as the system lights up green, Laminar Research has accomplished several key features in the game. These include rain and snow cover for the airport and global scenery, animated jetties, FMOD implementation for airport vehicles, static aircraft traffic, new weather tools, and an ATC system. It still has to do things like perfecting flight modes and different models like the Airbus A330, among other features.

This developer update also confirms a lot of other things about X-Plane 12such as how it will feature 3D wakes for boats/seaplanes, 3D trees and be cross-compatibility with Ortho’s landscape photography packages X-Plane 11.

Laminar has yet to detail exactly when we can expect the sim. But the point of this update is to emphasize that the next time the team talks about X-Plane 12need to prepare players to jump into their virtual cockpit right after.

As the work continues to complete X-Plane 12Asobo continues to improve Microsoft Flight Simulator. That sim just received World Update 9, and three major pay software add-ons have also released. Having both sims on the market at that time will only accelerate the efforts of both parties in continuing to improve and upgrade to ensure consumers have a great experience.
