Chinese guide Xi JinpingThe first voyage from China outside mainland China in almost 2½ years is likely to be shorter than expected and may not take place at all if Covid-19 outbreaks flare up again, according to people familiar with the preparations.

For months, it has been expected that Mr Xi will travel to Hong Kong to mark the 25th anniversary of the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule. Hong Kong officials have begun exploring ways to narrow its itinerary to a day trip on July 1, the anniversary, rather than the usual multi-day affair, the people said.
