A person in a suit signs their name on a tablet device on a desk using the Adonit Star stylus, which looks like a fountain pen.

If the cartoons of the super-rich have taught us anything, it’s that if you amass enough money, you can get rid of that trusty pen, switch to a fancier fountain pen, and no worry about ruining a blazer if it does inevitably leaking. An enviable life, for sure, and one you can get a little taste of with the Adonite Star: a stylus disguised as a flashy Montblanc.

For those still determined to keep the stylus dream alive, Adonit remains one of the most respected names in the field and has been producing touchscreen friendly sticks since 2010. It announced this earlier this year Neo Pro pen which borrowed the Apple Pencil’s best trick: magnetic charging from the side of an iPad, but at a price that was over $80 cheaper than Apple’s offering.

On a technical level, the new Adonit Star brings absolutely nothing new to the stylus world. While it relies on a battery inside to replicate the interactions between a finger and a touchscreen, there’s no wireless connection between the stylus and a device, and unlike a finger, the Adonit Star uses an ultra-fine one-millimeter -Tip to improve accuracy and more precise writing on the screen. It also doesn’t offer any kind of wireless charging, instead relying on a USB-C connector hidden behind a cap on the end of the stylus. A one-hour charge will keep the Star for 11 hours of continuous use, so expect it at least last a few days with normal use.

This is not a pen for nerds or artists or even those who live at the cutting edge of technology. It’s for those who want a status symbol without all the complications of a real status symbol, like ink refills, or accidentally forget a $3,000 pen after signing the check at a restaurant. For just $50 you’ll feel like Rich Uncle Pennybags and the SEC will not be breathe your neck over anything questionable investments.
