Yvonne Strahovski Reacts to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Scenes, Serena Joy

She can play her in The story of the maid, but Yvonne Strahovski is not Team Serena. In honor of the premiere of The story of the maid season 5 on Hulu, Strahovski revisited some of Serena’s worst (and scariest) moments from The story of the maidThe past four seasons have been part of StyleCaster’s “World of Style” issue.

Strahovski played Serena Joy, the wife of Commander Fred Waterford and Handmaid’s arch nemesis June Osborne, in The story of the maid since season 1 in 2017. In her cover story for the “World of Style” issue, Strahovski explains how she’s seen Serena grow throughout the show. She goes from one end of the spectrum to the other, and then sits in the middle of the gray zone between good and evil, but never quite leaning towards the good. That’s probably why she’s such an interesting character to watch,” she said. “Audiences are finally supporting her, as she and June in previous seasons have gotten closer or when she showed a friendlier side. Then she just turned around and reverted back to her true self. “

Strahovski also spoke to STYLECASTER about how she “humanizes” Serena, even if she doesn’t support her actions. “Sometimes it’s hard for me to come to terms with how evil she is and try to justify things because, at the end of the day, my mission is to anthropomorphize her,” she said. “It’s not like I’m playing the villain for the villain’s sake. She is a woman who is also surviving in a terrible situation. ” She continued, “At first, when we met her on the way back to the pilot, she didn’t trust Fred. Fred clearly had an affair with a maid before. She had a bag of her own. I’m not saying it’s an excuse, it’s the foundation that a normal person who has been through certain things can turn you into something. has turned into a monster and like all the characters in Gilead, she is surviving in her own way and the only way she knows.”

For season five, Strahovski also teased how Serena and June’s relationship will change after Fred’s death in The Handmaid season four’s story finale. “Once Serena realized it was a good thing Fred was gone, the loneliness overwhelmed and became overwhelming for her,” she said. “What will she do to take charge of her life and really secure herself a space in the world? Where will that be? How will it happen? Where does she feel safe? ‘What is she going to do to me and my baby?’ was the biggest thing on her mind after she found out June had killed Fred. People are giving up her life. The absence of all these people was terrifying to her. She really has to dig into it and figure it out. She’s in survival mode like never before. “
