Scientists find stunning octopus world in the deep sea


Scientists have discovered a remarkable deep-sea octopus nursery off the coast of Costa Rica, marking only the third such site ever identified. The nursery, located near a low-temperature hydrothermal vent about 9,000 feet below the ocean’s surface, is home to what is believed to be a new species of Muusoctopus. Researchers observed female octopuses brooding their eggs and even witnessed baby octopuses hatching, challenging previous assumptions that such environments were inhospitable for development.
This discovery was part of two expeditions led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute in 2023, during which scientists also identified four new octopus species in the region. The warm hydrothermal vents appear to play a crucial role in accelerating egg incubation, offering protection from predators during the lengthy developmental period. These findings highlight the rich biodiversity of the deep sea and underscore how much remains to be explored and understood about these mysterious ecosystems.
